Mumbai Film City
The State Government of Maharashtra had built the Film City in 1978 to assist the Hindi film industry as well as be responsible for the facilities required for it to thrive. The expansive complex of the Film City is spread over 350 acres and is fully furnished with twenty indoor studios along with the outdoor workspace for shooting movies and documentaries.
To reach the Film City, you need to go to Goregaon area of Mumbai, where you will find your destination in the periphery of lush and secluded Aarey Colony. You can also visit the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, which is located in the neighborhood of Film City as well, and you can reach there using the Western Expressway. Although the Film City does not allow public admission, you can go there with prior permission. You can also take an accompanied tour for a better visit.
Guided Bus Tours
The best option to visit the Film City is to take a guided tour of the Mumbai Film City Tours, which operates with the assistance of Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation. The guided bus takes you to different locations of the entire place. However, you may not see a live shooting going on unless you are lucky enough to witness one. The only drawback of opting for a guided tour is that you cannot get off your bus. Three trips per day are conducted in the Film City, which costs 599 INR for Indians and 3000 INR for non-nationals. You can make an online booking for your tour.
Other tours
The Mumbai Film City Tours offers studio tours as well, which are conducted outside the complex of Film City.
Dream Tour
The dream tour concentrates on post-production; it takes you behind the scenes to let you see the singing studio and dubbing studio. With the option of three tours in a day, the Indians need to pay 699 INR and the foreigners are required to pay 1500 INR.
Live Show Tour
The Live Show Tour takes you to the live shooting scenes of a TV show. You can see various actors on their job, and you can ask them for a picture with them. You can choose from two tours in a day, and it takes 1,260 INR for Indians and 2,500 INR for the non-nationals. Book your tours in advance.
Combination Tour to save cost
You can save some money by taking this combination tour, which is a mish-mash of the Dream Tour and the Film City tour. You will need to spend 1,300 INR if you are an Indian, and 3,500 INR if you are a foreign national.
Half Day Bollywood Tour
The Half Day Bollywood Tour combines the Live Show Tour and the Dream Tour. Indians can take this tour for 1,900 INR.
Full Day Bollywood Tour
The Full Day Bollywood Tour blends all the three excursions- the Live Show, the Dream Tour, and the Film City Tour. The cost of this tour is 2,500 INR for Indians.
Other places to hand around
After you are done with taking any of these tours, you can rent cars in Mumbai to hand around at various other locations. The Film City is an integral part of Mumbai, and the trip to the city is incomplete without visiting here. Although you can find Film Cities in other cities also, the one located in Mumbai is unsurpassed.
